Be Who You Are!
The relentless pressures of the modern life – career demands, financial burdens, societal expectations – can easily leave us feeling disoriented and unsure of our true selves. This sense of alienation and the need to belong can drive us to our knees today. In the bustling city of Colossae, the early Christian community faced similar anxieties amidst changing social and philosophical landscapes.
On top of the dwindling economy, new teachings challenged their understanding of faith. Faced with doubt and uncertainty, many found themselves tempted to abandon their faith. It was within this context that the Apostle Paul wrote his letter to the Colossians, offering a message that resonates powerfully even today.
At the heart of Paul’s message lies a profound truth: our identity is not defined by the external chaos but by our redemption in Christ. We are no longer individuals striving to keep pace with life’s demands; we are reconciled with God, declared holy and blameless in His eyes. This shift in perspective offers a transformative anchor, a source of unwavering worth and purpose that transcends the anxieties of this world.
However, “being redeemed” is not a one-time event, but a continuous journey. Paul exhorts the Colossians (and us) to “persevere in the faith.” This implies holding onto the life-changing truth of the gospel, the truth that sets us free even when life pulls us down.
So, how can we translate this message into practical action? Here are some guiding principles:
1. Escape the Comparison Trap: Instead of chasing the mirage of perfection portrayed on social media, celebrate your identity as a follower of Christ. Recognize and appreciate the unique blessings and challenges that shape your journey.
2. Seek Refuge in the Gospel: Allow God’s love and grace to be your anchor specially in moments of doubt or despair. Immerse yourself in scripture, prayer, and worship, reminding yourself of your inherent worth and purpose as a child of God.
3. Foster a Supportive Community: Surround yourself with fellow believers who understand and affirm your “redeemed” identity. Seek out a faith community that provides encouragement, support, security, and opportunities for spiritual growth.
4. Embody Your Faith: Translate your inner transformation into outward actions. Demonstrate compassion, kindness, and love towards others, sharing the grace you have received in your own life. Be a beacon of light in your community, sharing the gospel message with authenticity and humility.
Remember, although born into this world with its expectations and pressures, you have been born anew in Christ with an identity that transcends earthly limitations. Embrace your redeemed self, live authentically according to your faith, and know that even in the midst of challenges, God remains your constant companion.
You are redeemed! The world will pressure you to conform to it. The world will ask you to compromise. The world will try to defeat you. But Christ has already won the victory for you. You are victorious. That is your new identity. Be who you are.
